This style portrays a particular subject (usually a single subject) using line extension and broken color techniques. Philip The Duck

Once upon a time, on the little pond close to my house, lived a little duck. I saw him every day coming back from work. The little duck was always there. I named him Philip.

Philip the Duck was my very first experiment with acrylic paints. I did my drawing influenced by my quilting background and timidly started to paint with a brush. I didn’t like the result and started looking around to find something else to paint with. Then I saw the stencil sponges.

I put a few touches on the support… and I liked it. I experimented more and thus the “vitralism” style was born – paintings that resemble stained glass.

I added the crown molding after I finished the piece, then painted it trying to match colors and shapes.

I build all my supports with the help of my family. I like the fact that I can decide sizes and shapes. I don’t want limitations when designing a piece.

Woodpecker In Flight

A vision from a magazine, this bird impacted me profoundly. I didn’t know woodpeckers where so colorful.

I did the original design to make a quilt – you can see that the bird is “cut in pieces.”

By then, my hands were not healthy enough to endure another quilting project and that’s how I decided to make a painting out of it.

Most of the painting was done with stencil sponges, only the feathers were done with brushes.

If you must know, I used to be afraid of brushes – I didn’t think I had the knowledge and hand control to use them.

Monarch Butterfly

I know… it’s a bug…. What a beautiful bug, though!

This particular Monarch butterfly was designed to be a quilt. Not able to endure big sewing projects anymore, the design became a painting.

I used stencil sponges to work the background in Vitralism style, then used brushes for the butterfly’s body.

Butterflies, like birds, are colorful and vibrant. They represent freedom and beauty, movement and grace, air moving under their wings, ups and downs.

These beautiful creatures remind me of being a child running after their color, trying to catch them as precious trophies, trying to build a habitat to keep them alive, close to me, to be able to see them fly and let my mind fly with them.

Butterflies are like floating dreams, songs of the air, and decorations of nature.

I like birds in two ways: flying free or in pictures.

I love looking for the perfect bird picture in magazines to get inspired and paint these beautiful creatures.

Gordi is a bird that, while standing on his favorite tree, becomes part of it (look at his legs).

The vitralism technique (paintings that resemble stained glass) was used on the background of this piece.

Winter Peep II

Yes… Winter Peep I exists but I don’t where it is.

I painted the first Winter Peep (a blue bird) as a request from a dear friend. The painting was donated as a fundraiser to Houston Boychoir.

Since I didn't have Winter Peep I, I decided to paint Winter Peep II. It’s a simple story, not deep at all. It’s just about my love for birds and color. Love for freedom.

Miracle Flower

This is the story of the Miracle Flower, as told by my sister. Our dad died in 1992. I spent all the afternoon of Wednesday, December 20 2006, cooking two lasagnas that would be the main dishes for our Christmas dinner at my Aunt Virginia's house. At some point my mom, who was napping, came downstairs; we talked a little about how to cook the lasagnas, you know, nothing special. My daughters were not at home, only my mother and I were there. Minutes later, I went out to the backyard into the big dog fence trying to find some basil for the sauce but I couldn’t find any. So I went back into the house, empty-handed, and continued chopping stuff. Suddenly, I turned back and looked towards the microwave oven, around which were my chopped onions, and then I saw a hibiscus bud. You know, a little hibiscus bud, closed, just laying there. I got scared and surprised. I didn't bring anything back from the backyard. Immediately I thought of my dad... but no, how could that be...Well, my...
