Mele Flórez-Avellán was born to create. From a very young age, Mele has been involved in all types of creative processes. Mele has successfully created works by sewing, quilting, drawing, clay sculpting, singing and composing songs (lyrics and music), writing (plays and musicals), acting, vocal arrangements, and her favorite creative form: painting with acrylics. It's no surprise that such a creative being found her specialty in painting portraits. Her father and grandfather were both excel

Large-scale paintings capture the intimate beauty of people and the nature that surrounds them. Colorful, large portrait paintings have a way of catching your eye, making it almost impossible to look away. I really enjoy the creative process of making large portrait paintings, saturated with color and full of special details. With my commissioned portraiture paintings, I work hard to capture that ‘special something’ about the subject – that look, that glance, that feel of the person. I

My topic for today is Productivity and I will focus on our company. As a little introduction I’ll relate an experience I had 12 years ago when I was a Management student in college, a career that I did not like but I decided to study. Our professor asked us to write an essay about productivity and we had do some research and ask people about it. I decided I did not want to do much because I did not like the career, so on a good day I sat down under a tree and began to write a pretty poem about

Stress: The way to deal with it

In my leisure time I used to write very unusual things. I have many chapters describing the funny way to deal with the facts of life. It’s addressed to people who take life too seriously. Taking life that way is the stressing thing. In my research about people, stress and amusement, I discovered that a good laugh every five minutes is like taking Tylenol every four hours. Happy thoughts, as the philosopher Peter Pan used to say, make you feel like flying - although he was pretty serious abou

Working in an igloo is a joy. An igloo is a very cold place that sometimes can resemble an office. People who work in an igloo have more chances to avoid aging than those who work in a warm and cozy place. One advantage could be the following: Imagine yourself having a very hot cup of tea that you want to drink right away. It is so hot that you have to wait a while. Your nose is already cold enough because of the low temperature, so you may introduce it into your cup of tea, using it as an i

Christmas in Venezuela is a wonderful, noisy, and happy event. All those things related to music, food, and religious traditions take place in a country that has no winter. Not only because Venezuela has tropical weather, but because everybody is so warm there. So we pretend to feel the cold of the artificial snow that decorates an imported tree. The most musical folks organize a “parranda”, which is a group of people who sing our native Christmas music. The least lazy people wake up very

I was a foreigner when I moved to Texas five years ago, from Valencia Venezuela. I did not know what it was going to be like living in this huge state, where you need a car to go to anywhere. I finally saw with my own eyes authentic cowboys, with boots and hats, walking on the streets instead of riding horses, and what surprised me the most was the friendly way Texans greet others every time they have the opportunity. Five years after, I am still a foreigner, but I am not a stranger anymore.

Introduction There was a time when I was young and crazy. I’m not that young anymore, but I’m still crazy after all these years. At that time, I needed somebody to make me go in the right direction. I was waiting for somebody who was happy to lead me feel happy, wise to teach me how to live, and charming to catch me and make me believe in the ideas that were supposed to make me change. *Simple as it sounds, these are the qualities that made my concept of a leader: In other words: attitude, kn

After many years of absence, my sister-in-law, well known as a very loving mother and for having an explosive personality, went to Venezuela with her two little children. They went to visit a famous museum in downtown Caracas, which is now a pretty dangerous place. When the cab stopped in front of the museum, she stepped down with her 180 pounds of weight and a big smile on her face. Then, a tiny thief approached her and with a ferocious grimace, put a big knife in front of her face and sho

TUTIN FR

NOTE: Original play in Spanish written by Mele Florez-Avellan... Translation provided by Melissa Avellan Florez THE PROPHETIC ONE: Nobody knows the origin of this touching story, in which our actors will let us feel their admirable histrionic abilities and their love for the Egyptian poetry, also called the poetry of the Egyptians. We only know for sure that our story happened in a very hot afternoon in spring, summer, fall or winter, in the time of the abacus and tunics, in Cairo, ancient E
